A series of weekly articles for the Daily Progress touching on such diverse topics as Thomas Jefferson; a municipal water system; Civil War incidents; the town during the Recolutionary War and in 1820, 1830, 1835, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890; the Monticello Guard; churches; the election of 1840; an 1880 regatta; the flood of 1870; the Rotunda fire; the Monticello Wine Company and Woolen Mills fires, 1881, 1882; an 1879 art exhibit; the Agricultural Society of Albemarle; a mock duel by two University students over a game of billiards in 1878; dedication of the Confederate monument; the visit of Lafayette in 1824; and Monticello in 1878. With each article is a copy of an article or notice that appeared in the Charlottesville paper 100 years previously.

Charlottesville Woolen Mills

Located in Charlottesville, Va. and begun as a woolen mill during the Civil War, the company occupied the site of an earlier cotton carding and spinning mill. Incorporated in 1868 by H.C. Marchant, the mill did carding and fulling for the local domestic market and produced a coarse grade of woolen cloth. Later it produced flannels, satinets, kerseys and cassimeres. It later specialized in uniform cloth, including cadet greys, venetians, and kersey overcoating. The mill operated until 1965. ...
